Motorola and Google Cloud team up to bring generative AI to Razr family of smartphones

China’s Lenovo Group Ltd.-owned smartphone brand Motorola and Google Cloud today announced a multiyear partnership to bring generative artificial intelligence to Motorola phones, starting with the new series of Razr smartphones.

Among the first phones to get the AI experiences will be Motorola’s flagship Razr 50 Ultra clamshell smartphone, which is launching today.

The new service, called “Moto ai,” will be natively integrated across all smartphone applications and bring users an enhanced smartphone experience that will use the AI models to allow them to complete tasks, generate images, produce content, recall information from their personal networks, write emails, text messages and more. Moto ai aims to provide context-aware personal and collaborative input throughout the smartphone experience for users.

“Moto ai empowers users to intuitively create content, personalize their device, obtain the information they seek, and accomplish more in less time – all made possible by Google’s most advanced AI,” said Dan Dery, vice president of AI, ecosystem and internet services at Motorola.

The company said that Moto ai will be present in devices today and can assist with anything from camera to battery and to display and device performance information. Motorola said that the objective was to integrate the new AI experience as deeply and natively as possible into the device so that users would find it easy to call up from within the operating system and applications.

The strategic relationship allows Motorola to use AI models from Google Cloud’s Vertex AI cloud-managed service that provides access to Gemini, Google’s flagship artificial intelligence model that allows for the contextual and conversational understanding of information, and Imagen a text-to-image producing model.

The two companies said that two stand-out features added from this partnership include Magic Canvas and Style Sync. Magic Canvas is an image creator that lives on the phone that allows users to turn descriptions from their imagination into vivid graphics that they can use in their everyday communication from text messages, social media and emails. Style Sync takes their phone’s look and feel and matches it to a user’s personal style using their camera by matching their outfit and adjusting their wallpapers, themes and icons to their look.

“The latest lineup of Razr smartphones applies the power of Google’s AI models in creative and practical ways that raise the bar for how smartphones can act as helpful companions for users across the globe,” said Umesh Vemuri, vice president of strategic pursuits at Google Cloud.

Motorola said that Moto ai will also learn as users interact with it, gathering context and understanding of the habits and behaviors of users to assist them with their devices better. For example, it would learn to deliver personalized summaries of priority communications, transcribe and summarize personal communications, recall important information from conversations that come up often and more.

Moto ai is available now as part of Razr’s new line of smartphones, including the Razr 50 Ultra, which is launching today in select countries within Latin America, and Europe and is available for pre-order in North America, India and select countries in Asia Pacific in the coming weeks.
