Longer-term API attacks are suited to artificial intelligence security, says expert

A proliferation of application programming interfaces, critical now to organizations, has prompted one firm to specialize in the area to such an extent that it can claim to be the largest growing API threat vector solution.

Salt Security Inc. has recently formed a partnership with CrowdStrike, which furthers CrowdStrike’s recent thrust in trying to cover all aspects of an organization’s cyber security, not just the traditional information technology-related.

“APIs are just growing like crazy,” said Michael Nicosia (pictured), co-founder and chief operating officer of Salt Security.

He spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante at Fal.Con 2022, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how the API security firm has differentiated itself and also touched on some growth factors (* Disclosure below.)

Watch for your momentum

“We’re the only AI/ML-based solution with deep context, so we can really take a closer, granular look at the APIs,” Nicosia said. “Model those APIs, create a baseline and really protect against them.”

Leveraging big data, along with its context, is allowing the company to baseline the API itself, he explains. That whole big data aspect becomes particularly important as the attacks get more unique. “These attacks could be days, weeks, months and we’re the only vendor that can correlate across that timeline.”

Nicosia, too, discussed synergies with his new-found partnership: As partner CrowdStrike does, he believes the cloud is a crucial element. Additionally, from a sales perspective, the two companies go after the same kind of “cloud-first innovative companies.”

“If you think about all of the areas that have potential breaches, threats; we cover them all with the partnership,” Nicosia said.

Interestingly, expanding on sales, Nicosia gets into the million-dollar question of how his company scaled: “It’s validating that there’s a problem that exists in the market and how important is that problem to CISOs,” he said. It’s in the early stages that those questions need asking, he believes. “And you really need to look at the momentum that is being established.”
