Cloud-native tools are seeing steady forward movement, with Kubernetes’ ability to manage application states as a strong example.

Organizations are now deploying and managing stateful applications at scale with Kubernetes solutions like Kasten.

“It’s definitely gone beyond the early adopters; that’s what I’m seeing,” said Tom Leyden (pictured, right), vice president of marketing, Kasten at Veeam. “If you look at the kinds of companies that you’re talking to, it’s a much wider adoption. It’s no longer just those at the cutting edge; it’s a broader audience that we’re seeing now versus before.”

Leyden and Thomas Manville (left), vice president of engineering at Veeam Software Inc., spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Savannah Peterson and Rob Strechay at the recent KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed trends filtering out of the Kubernetes community, especially concerning storage validation. (*Disclosure below.)

Dealing with Kubernetes’ associated complexity

As the largest Kubernetes backup services provider, Veeam’s primary challenge has been handling the complexities its customers face with increasingly complex, diverse and scale-intensive operations, according to Manville.

“We see that with scale comes complexity in things,” he said. “Our focus is to make sure we simplify a lot. The tech has been pretty inaccessible in general for a lot of people. There are so many projects and vendors in the space, and it can get overwhelming for a lot of people. We want to make sure that we can support different customers, and it’s our biggest challenge right now.”

One example is in the area of errors in the configuration of workloads in Kubernetes environments. To combat this, users are provided with open-source tools to validate the storage within that environment and glean other relevant metrics, Manville explained.

“It’s actually an open-source project, and anyone can use it and contribute to it,” he said. “But it’s been very helpful for our sales teams, who go to customer environments because the number one issue they face [from customers] initially is, ‘I have the storage, but maybe it’s configured incorrectly.'”
