Dell unveils purpose-built edge servers for the growing edge computing market

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, edge computing has emerged as a hot topic, driving innovation and transforming industries across the board.

In an interview at Dell Technologies World, theCUBE talked to Kyle Illgen (pictured, right), consultant, product management, emerging server solutions at Dell Technologies Inc.; and Arnaud Langer (left), global senior product director of edge and IoT at Atos SE, about the intricacies of edge computing and Dell’s approach to this paradigm shift.

“The edge is pretty fragmented,” Illgen said. “The interesting thing we’ve found … everybody on the edge space has very similar goals and similar limitations with their hardware and what they’re trying to build out.”

Illgen and Langer spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at Dell Technologies World, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Dell’s purpose-built servers designed specifically for edge environments, the wide range of use cases that can leverage these servers and the critical role they play in enabling emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and 5G. Dell’s XR class of servers: Empowering edge computing

Dell is making waves in the tech industry with its latest release of purpose-built edge servers, designed to support the growing demand for edge computing solutions. Illgen and Langer shed light on the significance of Dell’s XR class of servers and its impact on the edge computing landscape.

Dell’s XR class of servers are a crucial part of the company’s extensive edge product portfolio, according to Illgen. As the industry shifts its focus to edge computing, Dell is committed to providing not just software solutions, but also purpose-built hardware that can operate effectively in non-data center environments. The goal is to bring data closer to the point of discovery, minimizing the need for data to travel all the way back to a centralized data center.

The collaboration between Dell and Atos centers around the NativeEdge platform, enabling end-to-end value propositions for customers by combining the right hardware with Dell’s streaming data platform for data orchestration and analytics.

“Having the capability to have the right hardware at the right place with the streaming data platform … creates the tool set you need to have an end-to-end value prop for your forward customers, where we can ingest data, realize the business value, all that in a single box,” Langer said of NativeEdge.

Industry insights: Transforming businesses with edge computing

While retail and manufacturing are considered the first movers in the space due to their significant data creation requirements, other industries, such as healthcare and mining, are also joining the edge revolution. The flexibility and scalability of Dell’s XR class of servers make them suitable for a wide range of applications, from real-time AI in manufacturing to facial recognition for customer rewards programs.

In addition, Dell’s edge servers come with the same robust security features found in their data center servers, Illgen stated. Dell has implemented secure supply chains, secure sockets and built-in security measures to safeguard data and networks from potential threats.

“We’re one of the leaders in cybersecurity. You get that at the edge,” Illgen said. “We’ve built in a lot of features and security features on the software side and the hardware side to make sure that everything’s secure, and you don’t have bad actors working with your network.”
