Democratizing generative AI: Sustainable computing for a better world
Taiga Cloud Ltd. is Europe’s first and largest generative artificial intelligence cloud service provider, focusing on ethical and responsible AI usage.
Gen AI technology has the potential to bring imagination to life, but it is crucial to use it ethically and responsibly, according to Karl Havard (pictured), managing director of Taiga Cloud, part of Northern Data Group.
“People’s imagination can now be brought to life, but then on the flip side of that, imagination can go everywhere, so I think we have to do it in absolutely the most ethical way we possibly can,” Havard said. “We need to support the right organizations to develop what they want to develop and qualify those, call them rogue-type of organizations that want to get hold of this technology and prevent them from doing wrong things with it.”
Havard spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Rob Strechay and Rebecca Knight at the HPE Discover Barcelona event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed collaboration between Taiga and HPE to democratize access to compute power and AI, while prioritizing ethical and sustainable computing. (* Disclosure below.)
Collaboration for the betterment of the planet
Startups and life science companies are the target audience for Taiga Cloud, as Taiga wants to fuel the European economy with equal access to gen AI, Harvard explained.
“We’re not focused on specific organizations who are going to take a lot of GPUs. Startups that share the same values as us are absolutely at the heart of our target audience,” he said. “Because if we can help them succeed, great, we’ve done part of our job. Likewise, life science companies around drug discovery, universities on research and around things like that, perfect customers as well. s as well. We want to make sure everyone has a fair share.”
Shared commitment to sustainability and democratizing AI is important for the working relationship, according to Havard. The final goal is to bring value to businesses by offering a full-rounded solution to help organizations succeed in their objectives for the benefit of the planet or humankind.
“What we do is we have infrastructures of service. We rent the compute power out and host the customer,” he added. “We do have a sister company in our group called Ardent, who are managing a lot of data centers. If organizations have access to their own compute power, we can bring them on-stream as well and offer them that hybrid model should they want to.”
