CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy on Snowflake’s vision for data and AI integration
The advancements in data technology and artificial intelligence have significantly reshaped the landscape of enterprise software. “The pace of play is absolutely breathtaking,” said Sridhar Ramaswamy (pictured), chief executive officer of Snowflake Inc. “[We must] seize opportunity, because you need to do [things] quickly. Otherwise, there’ll be competition. Otherwise, the opportunity will vanish. Not a week passes by without another model breakthrough, without somebody else getting another amazing product done.”
Ramaswamy spoke with theCUBE’s Dave Vellante at Data Cloud Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Snowflake’s commitment to innovation and customer trust, emphasizing advancements in data technology and Snowflake AI integration to meet the evolving needs of modern enterprises. Snowflake AI integration: Navigating the intersection of data and AI
Ramaswamy, newly appointed CEO of Snowflake, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for combining technology with product innovation. Having met with over 100 customers, a key learning was that organizations place immense trust and reliance on Snowflake, he said.
“A lot of our customers run pretty much all of their data on Snowflake. They want us to do more,” he said.
The recent announcements around Iceberg and Polaris reflect Snowflake’s commitment to meeting these demands by enhancing data interoperability and expanding capabilities. These innovations aim to provide seamless integration and improved efficiency for businesses managing complex data environments.
Another hot topic is AI. With the increasing interest in the technology, many companies are enthusiastic about its possibilities but unsure of how to begin. To address this, Snowflake offers clear and practical pathways to help businesses effectively leverage AI technologies, according to Ramaswamy.
“People don’t quite know how to get started, and they’re looking to ask for what are simple, effective, cost-effective ways in which to get started with AI,” he said.
Snowflake’s roadmap, which includes applications such as chatbots and Cortex Analytics, aims to provide clear and practical pathways for businesses to leverage AI effectively. By offering user-friendly tools and guidance, it helps companies seamlessly integrate AI into their operations, Ramaswamy explained.
Driving innovation in a rapidly changing landscape
The rapid pace of innovation in AI and data technology demands a mindset geared toward urgency and continuous improvement. Ramaswamy drives the company forward with a relentless focus on speed and efficiency, ensuring that Snowflake remains at the forefront of technological advancements.
“Rather than a wartime CEO, I would stress the quality that I bring to the table is to make my teams have the gas pedal floored even when we are ahead, even when it’s not wartime. To me, that is what creates sustained success,” Ramaswamy said.
This drive is crucial in an industry where advancements occur at breakneck speed. By fostering a culture of rapid innovation, Snowflake can quickly adapt to emerging trends and maintain its competitive edge, Ramaswamy pointed out.
“We announced Cortex AI as a product in November. We said, ‘We are going to be doing this … private preview.’ It went into GA three weeks ago,” he said. “That is unheard of pace in enterprise software, but that’s what you need to succeed today.”
Snowflake’s vision centers on being a cloud computing platform that is fundamentally data-centric. This approach allows the company to offer a strong foundation for data storage and processing while incorporating advanced features such as collaboration and AI integration.
“We think of ourselves as a cloud computing platform but centered on data,” Ramaswamy explained. “We absolutely want to be the best platform that there is for storing data, for running data processing. That’s the core. That compute engine that is so magical, that’s the core of Snowflake, and we are expanding it … things like Iceberg, Polaris or Hybrid Tables, which is for transactional data, it expands that core.”
This core focus on data, combined with the ability to handle AI applications, positions Snowflake as a versatile and powerful tool for businesses. The integration of AI is viewed as a horizontal layer that enhances various aspects of business operations.
“AI is one of these pervasive technologies, but at our core, our thesis is that a cloud that’s centered on data is a more useful product for customers, is more useful for partners to build on, and that’s the vision that we have,” Ramaswamy said.
This strategic vision aims to create a seamless and efficient platform that supports a wide range of data and AI-driven applications. Snowflake’s commitment to openness and interoperability is also a key part of its strategy.
“Supporting the Iceberg format, leaning into it with the Polaris Catalog lets us bring the power of Snowflake to all of the data that a customer has, not just the part that they brought into Snowflake,” Ramaswamy said.
This approach ensures that Snowflake can act on a diverse array of data sources, providing comprehensive solutions that address the needs of modern enterprises.
